Emergencies happen every day and you can't always get to the vet in time. So would you know how to give basic medical care to your pet? Would you know how to perform step-by-step canine first aid and healthcare? Do you have the knowledge and confidence to understand and treat minor ailments at home without running to the vet every time?
Not all emergencies are life-threatening but most of us don't have a clue what to do if our pet has any type of physical ailment. So we just get in the car and make the costly trip to the vet for something simple that we could have dealt with at home. Just as you have a good idea when your child needs a doctor and when he just needs some TLC from Mom, the same can be said of our pets ... if we know what to do!
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, "In 2005, pet owners spent approximately $800 per pet for veterinary care and procedures, with the average owner spending $12,000 for a small dog and $23,000 for a large dog over the lifetime of their pet".
As a responsible pet owner, it only makes sense to have an increased awareness of your dog's needs and problems. And by having the confidence and knowledge to understand their injuries and illnesses and give them the necessary treatment, you will often be able to safely take care of canine first aid at home as well as know how to recognize sick dog symptoms.
